A seed kit is the cheapest way to fill a windowsill with herbs. A grocery-store basil pot can cost about what a whole pack of seeds does, and seeds give you round after round of plants. We looked through SeedsNow's herb kits and picked the ones that make the most sense for growing indoors, based on what's in each pack and what it costs.

Do you need a kit or single packs?
If you only cook with basil and parsley, two single packs (about $3.99 to $9.99 each at SeedsNow) are enough. A variety pack pays off once you want four or more herbs, since you're paying a little over a dollar per variety. See SeedsNow's herb seeds for single packs.
Which herbs to start first
Start with the easy ones. Basil, chives, parsley and cilantro sprout reliably indoors. Rosemary, lavender and thyme are slow and patchy from seed, so sow extra and be patient. Our guides walk through each: basil, chives, parsley, cilantro and rosemary.
What else you need
- Light: a bright south window, or a small LED grow light on a timer for 12 to 16 hours a day. See our grow light picks.
- Starting pods or mix: SeedsNow's organic seed starting soil pods are $4.99 for 10 or $28.99 for 100, as of Oct 2026.
- Pots with drainage holes for when seedlings grow up.
