Short answer: the Gardyn Home Kit 4.0 is worth it if you want to grow a lot of herbs and greens (up to 30 plants) and have about 2 sq ft of floor space near an outlet. It's overkill for a few cooking herbs on a counter. For that, a 6–12 pod countertop kit like the AeroGarden Harvest or a LetPot is the better fit. Budget for plant refills or the optional membership.

What is the Gardyn Home Kit 4.0?

The Gardyn Home Kit 4.0 is a floor-standing vertical hydroponic garden. Plants grow from pre-seeded "yCubes" that sit in 30 slots ("yPods") across three columns. A pump circulates water from a 5-gallon tank in the base, and two 40W LED light bars stand in front of the columns. It's built for volume rather than a counter: Gardyn lists it at 24" W × 12" D × 64" H, a 2 sq ft footprint, weighing 20 lb.

Two inward-facing cameras and sensors for water level, humidity and interior temperature feed Gardyn's app and its AI assistant, "Kelby". Gardyn includes two safety straps to fix the unit to a wall.

What does it cost to keep running?

The device is the big purchase, so check Gardyn's site for the current price. After that, the ongoing costs are plants and, optionally, membership:

You don't need a membership to grow. Gardyn says every purchase includes full app control of the light and water schedule, water-level monitoring and free replacements for plants that don't sprout.
