Can herbs grow with no sunlight at all?
Yes, if artificial light replaces the sun. Iowa State Extension says that when light levels are not adequate, herbs grow well under supplemental light, and recommends full-spectrum grow lights in high-output fixtures. Without enough light, herbs get thin and spindly with smaller leaves and weaker aroma (Penn State Extension). Penn State lists chives, cilantro and lemon balm as tolerating only 2–6 hours of direct sun, but even those need real light, not just a dim room.
