What is the Gardyn Home Kit 4.0?
The Gardyn Home Kit 4.0 is a floor-standing vertical hydroponic garden. Plants grow from pre-seeded "yCubes" that sit in 30 slots ("yPods") across three columns. A pump circulates water from a 5-gallon tank in the base, and two 40W LED light bars stand in front of the columns. It's built for volume rather than a counter: Gardyn lists it at 24" W × 12" D × 64" H, a 2 sq ft footprint, weighing 20 lb.
Two inward-facing cameras and sensors for water level, humidity and interior temperature feed Gardyn's app and its AI assistant, "Kelby". Gardyn includes two safety straps to fix the unit to a wall.

What does it cost to keep running?
The device is the big purchase, so check Gardyn's site for the current price. After that, the ongoing costs are plants and, optionally, membership:
- Plants without membership: Gardyn's FAQ says yCubes start at $4.99 each, plus $9.99 flat-rate shipping.
- Membership (optional): Gardyn lists $39/month monthly, $34/month on a 1-year plan or $29/month on a 2-year plan. It includes 10 plant credits a month with free shipping on one order, 60% off extra plants (from $1.99), and premium app features such as Kelby monitoring, Vacation Mode and timelapses.
- Free trial: Gardyn offers a 30-day membership trial in the app that auto-renews monthly unless you cancel.
- Electricity: Gardyn estimates about 47 kWh per month. Multiply that by your local rate.
You don't need a membership to grow. Gardyn says every purchase includes full app control of the light and water schedule, water-level monitoring and free replacements for plants that don't sprout.
What owners say
From public owner discussions (such as the r/Gardyn community), a few themes come up again and again. This is a summary, not our own testing:
- Good: very high capacity for the floor space, and an easy start with pre-seeded yCubes. New growers like the app guidance.
- Pump noise: most say normal operation is quiet, but the pump can get loud when the water is low or it picks up debris.
- Maintenance: mature plants need root trimming and periodic tank cleaning, and some owners report pump failures.
- Membership value: a common view is that it helps beginners, while experienced growers often drop it once they're comfortable with schedules and plant care.
